Band of Brothers

Last time we were in Toronto with Steven & Sara and Chris & Tonya, the guys were telling me what a great series Band of Brothers was. They watch it together every Remembrance Day weekend in honour of all the veterans who serve and have served. It’s a thoughtful tradition they have.

Chris uploaded the ten episodes and sent it up to us on Tuesday. Once I started watching it, I couldn’t stop. Last night we watched the tenth and final episode. It was very graphic in places and made us think about the horrors these soldiers had to face, and afterward, live with.
This series, originally broadcast on HBO, tells the story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. Based on interviews with survivors of Easy Company, as well as soldiers’ journals and letters, this 10-part series chronicles the experiences of these young men who knew extraordinary bravery and extraordinary fear. Based on the book written by Stephen Ambrose.
It made me think of my own Dad and Jane’s Dad, both of whom volunteered and both of whom have exactly the same medals.

Neither one would really talk about their war experiences although my Dad sometimes related funny times. Like the time his platoon came across a whole bunch of wine and the CO instructed Dad “Get rid of it.” So Dad, and all the guys with him, drank it all.
It gave us a glimpse of what it must have been like. Of course, without having really been there, it’s only a glimpse.
At the beginning of each episode they had the real life soldiers, who were depicted in the series, speak about their experience overseas. Even after all these years, the emotion they tried hard to conceal, was visible.
Jane and I are so proud that our Dads volunteered and fought for the freedoms we still enjoy today. And we are so grateful that we were lucky enough to have both of them return home
