Today I posted a video of my remarks regarding Canada US relations. It’s how I feel right now and it’s unlikely to change. Here’s the text:
Everyone has an opinion on the situation that has evolved between my country, Canada, and our neighbouring country to the South, the United States. This is mine:
I want to preface my remarks by stating that I am a 77 year old Canadian citizen born in the province of Quebec, a predominantly French speaking province. As an English speaking kid I never had a problem because of language. Most of the French kids were bilingual and would switch to English whenever I was a round.
All of us were taught to be respectful and courteous to each other including to our indigenous friends who lived on a nearby reserve. They went to the same school as me and participated in community events just like all the kids in the area.
I grew up with a sense of admiration and inspiration for the United States.
That is no longer the case. Over time I began to realize that many of the people in the US…not all, but many, somehow began to think they were better than everyone else. They’re not. In fact many of them who claim to be patriots wear Canadian flag crests when travelling because they understand that they’re not very well liked outside of the US. They’re hypocrites. Anyway despite the Canadian flag, their behaviour and demeanour soon give them away.
And the terrible treatment of minorities and marginalized groups became more and prevalent and especially after the election of Trump in the 2020 election. Despite his chronic lying and history of crooked business dealings, the US elected him to represent their country. He showed himself to be completely incompetent during the pandemic publicly maligned anybody who disagreed with him on anything.
He took a robust economy and ruined it.
Many of his supporters known as Magas became emboldened by his rhetoric and his modus operandi i.e. using incomplete sentences which invited his followers to fill in the blanks with some sort of violent action became more and more prevalent.
Then he gets re-elected in 2024 and within his first weeks starts a worldwide trade war which will hurt average people around the world. Not him or his wealthy cronies, just the average people. Clearly he does not care about anybody but himself.
The list of examples that demonstrate his callous disregard for everybody is endless. And he has no shame. Nothing embarrasses this guy.
So I am now at the point where I refuse to even travel inside the USA. And his crap about my country becoming a 51st state has so embittered me to the US that I now consider it and enemy. I never dreamed I would ever think this way about the US, but that’s the way I feel now. I will boycott everything made in the US from now on. I’ve already started.
I am now reading labels and supporting my own country by buying Canadian whenever I can.
And even if these tariffs that Trump has convinced people are paid by other countries were to be lifted today, there is no way that Canada US relations will ever be the same. He has shown very clearly that the US cannot be trusted. The rest of the world knows it too.
How would I treat US citizens that comes to Canada. I would treat them respectfully and courteously as long as they reciprocate. After all, they are spending money and helping the Canadian economy.
And its likely they are not Magas anyway. We don’t allow guns to come across the border with tourists.
So there you have it. A regular Canadian here who agrees with my Prime Minister (not governor) that the relationship between Canada and the US is OVER. It will NEVER go back to what it was.
The silver lining is that my government is actively seeking reliable partners in other parts of the world. And as he says, we can give ourselves more than any foreign government can take away.
Our elbows are up. Its Canada strong.
