Bright and Sunny

It’s  -10C this morning and the sun is shining brightly. It’s amazing how the weather can have an effect on your disposition. And with the days getting longer, it won’t be long before Spring is here.

It’s that time of year where our minds have turned to thinking about summer i.e. cottaging, gardening etc.

On the Minnie front, she is improving daily.

Good News on Minnie

Yesterday, Minnie was examined and a blood sample taken for analysis. Good news! The test results did not reveal any signs of diabetes or kidney problems.

She was prescribed a mild pain medication which we are to give her twice a day.
In the last couple of days, Minnie has been showing signs of her old self. She is no longer sequestering herself downstairs for hours on end.
The last couple of nights she has come up on our bed and looked for some petting. Like she used to do.
We are relieved that she is not suffering. No one wants that.

Minnie

MY Jane and I have become a little concerned about Minnie. We have noticed a deterioration in her activity in the last while. She used to come up from the Family Room to greet me first thing every morning, but now she rarely comes upstairs. And when she does, she seems to have some difficulty getting around. She’s very slow. Understandable since she is twenty or twenty one years old.

The other day, with the temperature above zero, I shovelled snow off the deck in order to take Minnie outside for a bit. After all, she is an outdoor cat. But as soon as I put her down, she headed for the door, wanting back inside.

We have called a vet to come to the house to do an assessment on her health. Cats are known to mask pain and we want to make sure this isn’t the case with her.

The vet, Dr. Moffat, and a technician, Crystal, arrived and did an examination of Minnie and took a blood sample on which they will run tests with the results available this afternoon. They were wonderful with Minnie.

They even trimmed Minnie’s nails which our previous vet was unable to do without sedating her.

The vet seems to think that we should provide Minnie with some pain medication to ensure she is comfortable. We will pick up the prescription after they have the blood results.

Blizzard in Barrie

This morning, we woke up to blizzard like conditions with the wind howling and snow blowing like crazy.

Our garden flags are flapping wildly in the wind and even some of our windows have become totally covered in ice and snow making it impossible to see through them.
The weather network is suggesting that we can expect another three weeks of cold but then there will be a quick transition into Spring. That’s good news!

I’m ready!

Grillicious in Barrie

This afternoon MY Jane and I went to a local pub called Grillicious. It was recommended by Jennifer Talluri who Jane knows. Jenn was working there so when we got there, it was chance for the two of them to chat. Besides the delicious food, the big attraction was a live jazz band, The Richard Whiteman trio, was playing from 2pm until 5pm. Every Sunday, a different group is here to entertain you while we sip a libation and nosh on something delectable.

The ambience was great, the food delicious and the service fantastic and, of course, the music was top notch.
While enjoying the music and food, the owner, Jason Thistle, stopped by to chat. He and his wife Josie used to have a food truck of the same name in Gravenhurst, but decided to open a more permanent location in Barrie. We’re glad they did.
Jason is a very engaging and likeable guy who goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable and at home. As he said, “We want this to be a place where friends can meet and socialize and just have a good time.”
Both Jane and I certainly felt very much at home and fully intend to go back.
Thanks for the great recommendation, Jenn and it was nice to finally meet you.

Audible Version of If The Walls Could Talk

I am excited and pleased to announce that an audible version of my book was released yesterday and is now available as well as the print and kindle versions.

Check out the free audible sample of one of my stories.
I am now exploring the idea of setting up in the local Chapters store to do a little in-store book promotion. I’m contacting the manager there to see what’s involved and maybe attend someone else’s “Meet the Author” promotion, to get an idea of what I have to do.
Keep an ear to the ground.

Boating Dishes

MY Jane posted a for sale notice of some boating dinnerware that we no longer use.

All of them have a rubber ring on the bottom to prevent sliding in wavy situations.

In a very short time, she got a message from Linda who said she would take them. Turns out that Linda is a Georgian Bay boating friend of many years.

It will be nice to see her this afternoon when she comes to pick up the dishes.

Something New

Yesterday I had an “enlightening” experience. By now I thought I pretty much knew how to change a light bulb. Not this one, though.

This one is positioned to shine down on our stylized Georgian Bay medallion.

My first attempt at changing the burnt out bulb was to simply turn it counterclockwise. Nope. That didn’t work. The I tried just pulling downward on it. Nope. Too hard to get a grip.
I know. I’ll put on rubber gloves to get some traction. Nope. That didn’t work either.
After several minutes of failed attempts, I decided to try removing the whole fixture. I reefed down on the thing and out it popped. I was surprised to realize this was what had to be done to change this bulb. Learn something new every day.

Busy Times

I have spent a few hours trying to learn how to put together a promo video in anticipation of the Audible version of If The Walls Could being released. I have a couple of methods in mind. I’ll try both and decide which one Iike best.

In the meantime, MY Jane has been busy re-finishing an end table belonging to Chris and Tonya.
And she also baked a bunch of delicious muffins.
And yes,I tried them. Delicious!

Busy times.

Audio Book If the Walls Could Talk

It seems my narration project of my book has passed the stringent standards set by ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) and from what I have read, it should become available for purchase on Amazon, Audible and I Tunes in the next week or so.

It was quite a learning curve for me to do the narration myself but persistence, in this case, paid off.
Stay tuned for an announcement as to when it hits the public airwaves.
In the meantime, I will ponder the notion of doing the narration of my second book, The Maraca Murders.

Young Folk Back Home

Steve & Sara and Chris & Tonya returned home this morning after a great weekend of birthday celebrations.

There was lots of conversation and a lot of off-key Happy Birthday singing by MY Jane and me during the gift opening.
Instead of cake this year, we opted for cupcakes which everyone enjoyed.
Another fantastic Family weekend.

More Snow

We’re getting more snow. It continues to fall this morning making for a pristine and clean view of the back yard.

Chris & Tonya and Steve & Sara arrived last night for a tri-Birthday celebration. Tonya’s actual birthday was Jan 30th, Chris’ was Feb 7th and Steve’s will be Feb 23rd. Everyone decided it made sense to celebrate them all together.
Last night, after a delicious dinner of double baked, loaded sweet potato and cod pieces, we got caught up on all the news.
Chris was thrilled to feel, for the first time, his baby’s (yet to be born) movements and we are thrilled for both of them.

Valentines Dinner

Last night, I took MY Jane for dinner at one of our favourite restaurants here in Barrie, The Crazy Fox Bistro. They had a special Valentines Day menu which was quite scrumptious.

(NB: I’m the one with the halo).

After dessert and coffee, we returned home to relax in front of the fire and watch a little TV.

Happy Valentines Day

MY Jane and I started today by exchanging Valentines Cards.

A great way to start the day. The sun even decided to come out to make the day brighter than it already is.

I have made dinner reservations at The Crazy Fox Bistro for tonight. Both of us are looking forward to a nice dinner out. We were there a couple of times before and enjoyed the ambience, service and food.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Staying Another Day

Because of the impending storm in the Southern Ontario area, we have decided to stay another day at Chris and Tonya’s. We still had a few things to finish up for the painting project so it all works out.

Our across the street neighbour, Jenny, has kindly agreed to check in on Minnie so we don’t have to worry about her.
We will head back tomorrow.

Progress

Jane and I arrived at Chris and Tonya’s yesterday and got some of the trim painted right away.

This morning we got the ceiling done and are starting to mask off the baseboards etc.
Chris had  already done minor repairs to the walls and sanded everything down.

Good progress.

Painting Baby Room

Today, MY Jane and I are heading down to Chris and Tonya’s for a visit and to paint the baby’s room. We volunteered to do this a few weeks ago. We have packed up our painting gear and intend to stay a couple of days.

It will be an opportunity to get caught up on all the news.
It’s not that long until May when the little one arrives. Everything will be set.

Cabin Fever

My Jane decided that, today, she had to get out of the house for awhile. We needed a few things, not on an urgent basis, but things that gave her reason to have a look in stores like Walmart. She asked me if I wanted to come along but I am quite content to stay home with Minnie and just putter around. That translates into doing a lot of nothing – something I do very well.

Earlier, over breakfast, Jane was telling me that she got an e-mail from Ancestry DNA advising that her sample had been received and was being processed. I had given her the DNA kit for Christmas. She was told that her results would arrive around March 1. Results will be broken down as per sample chart below.

I thought it would be fun for the family to guess her ethnicity percentages  beforehand, so we are going to have a little contest with whoever coming up with the closest number being declared the winner. We’ll do this when we get together for her birthday on March 10.
Should be fun.

Movie Green Book

Last night, MY Jane and I decided to take in a movie that was touted as being one of the better ones released last year. We had been wanting to try out the Uptown Theatre, Barrie’s oldest movie theatre. It was a typical old time theatre except this one had leather recliners for seats. Very comfortable.

They even had one of the old time movie projectors on display.
Jane and I loved this movie which was based on a true life story. It was entertaining throughout. Five stars out of five.

Branching Out

A few years ago, MY Jane and I bought a wall decal at Home Depot which we used to display family pictures in our Family Room.

Recently, we decided we needed a few more branches so we undertook to get the same decal package from Home Depot again, but they were of them and in fact, didn’t have them available anymore. Amazon to the rescue!

As you can see, we have added branches.

Recording Finished

This morning I finished recording the last few sections of my book, If The Walls Could Talk. I also finished editing and mastering the audio files to meet ACX standards.

It was time consuming but interesting to learn the basics about audio recording.

So the files have been sent in and it will take 10 to 14 days for them to do their quality assurance testing. If they pass, the book will become available on Audible.

Fingers crossed.

Reading Lights Re-located

It was pretty much a do nothing day for me today. The only productive thing I did was to fill some holes left after I re-located the reading lights over our bed.

Prior to moving them, we found that every time we pulled the bed out to vacuum or change the sheets, the brass head rail would hit them and they would get loose.

I raised the location from the previous lower position to this higher location. Much better.

Snowball Lantern

Yesterday, with the mild temperature, MY Jane and I decided to make a snowball lantern. In the afternoon we fashioned enough snowballs to make a teepee shaped cone in the front yard. We planned to light candles inside when it got dark.

By the time that happened, the top part of the cone had melted, but we decided to light it up anyway.
Despite the top not being there, it worked out pretty good anyway.

It lasted for about 3 hours until the candles burned out.

There wasn’t a trace of it left today.

Milder Today

The temperature has gone up to +6 C today and it’s supposed to stay  above freezing tomorrow as well.

Jane went out there to clean the snow off. There is still ice remaining on the deck, but if it continues to be mild, hopefully it will melt.
Then we can get Minnie out into the fresh air.
With the snow so wet and sticky, it’s a great opportunity for MY Jane and me to construct a Swedish Snowball Lantern, something I recently discovered on You Tube. We put five tea lights inside this thing and we’ll light it later when it’s dark.

Amazon

This morning, after Yahtzee which Jane won, we went to Home Depot looking for a wall decal to add to the one we have in the Family Room.

They discontinued the one we needed so we checked out Walmart and Canadian Tire. No luck.

So I checked out Amazon and sure enough, they had exactly what we need. Ordered.

Love Amazon.

Interesting Day

This morning MY Jane and I started our day with a nice breakfast of pancakes and sausages, orange juice followed by coffee.

After our daily Yahtzee tournament, which I won, we went for a little drive down to nearby Friday Harbour just to check things out. The development has become quite big with dozens more condos under construction. We ended up down at the lakeside where the beach normally is in the summer.
There were several ice huts directly in front of the beach.

Although the temperature was -10C, there was no wind, so it was quite enjoyable.

We finished our outing with some grocery shopping and a Tim Hortons coffee and Hot Chocolate.
