Wind Chill

I’m glad I got my new winter coat yesterday. With the wind chill, it’s extremely cold here today despite the bright sunshine. Minnie is taking advantage by snoozing in the warm sunlight streaming in our front window.

In the meantime, outside it’s so windy that our Canadian flag got shredded and I had to put up our back up flag.

New Winter Coat

Today MY Jane and I went to Sport Chek to look at winter coats for me. Jane had been there yesterday and spotted some nice Columbia  coats on sale. I like Columbia because they are wind proof and the one I got today has a reflective layer inside like the stuff they use for emergency blankets.

I tried it on and could instantly feel the warmth.
So I’m a happy camper now…..and warm, too!

Big Snowfall

We had a huge amount of snow fall since yesterday and it’s very cold here in Barrie.

MY Jane has a hair appointment later today and we’re hoping the snow plows will have cleared the side streets by then.

In the meantime, Minnie and I are just lazing around, glad to be inside where it’s warm and cozy.

Good News

I received word this morning via e-mail that the sample recording I sent in to ACX has met their standards.

This is good news because, now I can proceed full tilt with recording the rest of my book.
In the meantime, MY Jane has been busy with her photo album project. She has been scanning the hundreds of photos from the many albums we have. Some of the pictures are starting to yellow and fade.
But she has a portable scanner called a Flip Pal that allows scanning to be done without taking the photo out of the album. Not only that, she can attach an audio recording to each picture describing the circumstance of when the photo was taken.
It’s just like sitting down on the sofa with someone and leafing through the album while you describe what was going on at the time.
A great project.

ACX

I finally completed an audio recording of one chapter of my book, If The Walls Could Talk, and sent it in to ACX Quality Control for review. It has been a fascinating, albeit time consuming, exercise. I had no idea what was involved in dealing with digital audio. There are so many ways to manipulate and enhance audio recordings.

There are dozens and dozens of tools available on the internet to help in this regard. They are called plug-ins. They allow you to remove unwanted sounds like breaths or background fan noises and other such distracting sounds.
Hopefully, my submission will meet the stringent standards that Amazon Audible has set.

Preview of a New Book

A former Correctional colleague of mine, Stephen Lonsdale, is ready to soon release his ninth book called All Things Considered.

Like his other books, Steve is self-publishing this one on Amazon and he anticipates it will be available within the next week or so.
He was kind enough to send me an advance preview version and I have to say it was a very enjoyable read.
Once it’s available to the public, I’ll let everyone know.

Dirty Driving

This kind of weather makes for dirty driving conditions.

You have to make sure your vehicle has windshield washer fluid topped up.
Even so, there’s always something interesting to see when you get out of the house.

At The Mall

MY Jane and I went up to Georgian Mall earlier today to run a few errands. It was pretty quiet up there even though the parking lots were pretty full. The roads were clear and not icy  although the temperature has dropped.

We had lunch at the food court and enjoyed some people watching.
Sometimes it’s nice to treat ourselves at New York fries.
I continue to work on my efforts to record an audible book and I am making slow progress on the learning curve.

Staying Put

Yesterday MY Jane and I met up with our good friends, Annemarie and Jim, for lunch in Kleinburg which is roughly halfway between where each of us live. It was great to get caught up and visit.

It’s snowing right now and the Weather Network is calling for messy conditions for the rest of the day. It’s a good occasion to stay inside which is exactly what we plan to do.

Earlier this morning, I did some more research into recording my audible book. I have been in contact with a representative for ACX quality control, Brendan Solorz, and he has been very helpful.
I am optimistic that I will eventually get this done. It is, however, more daunting than I first thought.

Tenacity

There is something to be said for tenacity. Despite being discouraged with my recent unsuccessful attempts at recording a book for Amazon’s Audible, I took the advice of some of my FB friends and kept at it.

This morning, I was able to make a recording which, after some editing and mastering on Audacity, meets the quality specs required by ACX.
I’m a happy camper today.
This afternoon we are meeting up with our good friends, Annemarie and Jim, in Kleinburg for  lunch.

The Challenge

The sample recording that I sent in to ACX, the Quality Assurance part of Amazon’s Audible Books, advised me that my submission did not meet their standards. Upon further investigation of my recording, I discovered that my laptop has an internal crackle that messes things up.

So today, I am experimenting with the Mac that we have. And I managed, with Jane’s help, to download a plug in for Audacity which will allow me to check my recordings myself to see if they will meet ACX standards.
I feel I have made progress today and will continue to experiment. Stay tuned.

Post New Year Gathering

Last night MY Jane and I were hosts to our across the street neighbours, Jenny & Allan and our next door neighbours, the Jones Family: Chris, Rina, Colter & Carson.

Jane had suggested that everyone wear a hat of some kind and they ranged all the way from a King’s Crown, worn by Colter to a Harry Potter hat worn by Carson. Of course, I wore my wizard hat.

Jane had prepared an assortment of delicious snacks which everyone enjoyed immensely.

At different times throughout the night, all sorts of activity was happening. There was crokinole, darts and even karaoke.

It was a great evening enjoyed by everyone.

The Upside

Yesterday afternoon, MY Jane and I went to see a newly released movie called The Upside.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable movie, one that did not have any boring spots at all. It had all the elements of a good story; humour, tragedy, sorrow, and kindness and understanding.
Great acting by Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman.

More Recording

I continue to spend early in the morning recording the narration of my first book, If The Walls Could Talk, which was published last September. I do it very early because this is the quietest time of day thus making for a cleaner recording.

Every day I learn something new about the App called Audacity which I am using for this project. It’s more complicated than I first thought but, as with anything, if you take things a step at a time, eventually you reach your goal.
Fortunately for me, there is no deadline on this.

More Light Problems

Today I spent most of the morning trying to figure out how to get a small headlight bulb out of its socket. No such luck. I even enlisted the expertise of my across the street neighbour, Allan, who is very knowledgeable about such things, but we were still unable to do it.

I’ll have to check out YouTube.

Car Lights

I spent part of this afternoon replacing a headlight on our KIA Rondo. It’s pretty easy to do but then I discovered that one of the running lights was not working as well.

Fortunately my across the street neighbour, Allan, had a replacement on hand which he kindly gave me.
So we are back in shape now.
I wonder what a garage would have charged for this work.

Optometrist Appointment

Today I had a regular scheduled appointment with my optometrist. The last visit was over a year ago.

This one showed no real change. Same glasses prescription as last year.
I found it remarkable as to the equipment available these days. It gives me some assurance that these visits are worthwhile.

Learning Curve

I am continuing to read and watch YouTube videos on how to use my free download of a recording app called Audacity. I am amazed at the capabilities of this free software and learn something new every time I watch a video or re-read the manual.

It’s very interesting and a lot of fun playing around with this.

And because it’s pretty cold outside today, it helps pass the day.

Recording

I have been reading up on doing book narration at home and what equipment should be used. My take is, that to do a good job, you should try to use quality equipment. To that end I got a pretty good microphone from Best Buy and a Mic holder from Amazon. Headphones I got at Walmart.

I have spent the last few days playing around with an App called Audacity. This is used to record audio tracks for my latest project which is to make my first book, If The Walls Could Talk, into an audible version. Seeing that this book is a recounting of some of my experiences from my Correctional days, I felt I should do the narration.

From what I’ve read, Audible Books are becoming much more popular than print books or e-books.

We’ll see.

Mother Nature Artistry

This morning, Mother Nature decided to decorate our back door with some crystal designs in ice.

It is a very interesting design; similar to snowflakes, but almost feather like at the same time.
The wonders of nature, eh?

Another Year in a Book

Yesterday I received my Life Unfolding book for 2018 which is a hard copy of all my daily blogs from last year. It’s fun to sit down and flip through the memories.

This is the fifth such book and it makes my daily blogs entries very worthwhile.

Crazy Weather

It began snowing this morning around 8AM. Big snowflakes, the kind that you used to like letting hit your tongue when you were a kid.

Weather patterns seemed to have changed over the last several decades. My recollection of years ago was that it began to get colder in the Fall and kept getting colder and colder until Spring when it then start to get warmer and warmer.
Now, it seems it’s all over the map. One day balmy, the next day co,d and blustery.
It’s crazy!

Audacity

Today I did some experimentation with a free recording app called Audacity. Of course, there are all kinds of tutorials about this app on You Tube. What isn’t on You Tube?

I was amazed at what can be done with Audacity. You can lower your voice and edit your narration in so many ways. It’s even possible to remove unnecessary pauses, re-record phrases if necessary and so much more.
Once I get the microphone holder that I ordered on Amazon, I’ll begin doing a narration of my book, If The Walls Could Talk. Depending on how that goes, I may do my second book, The Maraca Murders. We’ll see.

Dinner Out

Several weeks ago we had ordered ribs from St Louis Bar and Grill, using Skip the Dishes. Turns out the delivery lady named Divine wasn’t so divine after all. She never did show up.

The people at St Louis Bar and Grill felt very badly.  They offered us a complimentary meal voucher which we will use tonight.
After spending a lot of time today watching TV and looking at video tutorials on how to set up a home recording studio, I just don’t have the energy to watch MY Jane cook supper. It seems like the right thing to do.

New Project

Today I took a spin up to Best Buy to look for a quality microphone. I spent a few hours on the internet researching them and decided on this one.

My new project is to make my book, If The Walls Could Talk, into an audible book. While sales of the printed version of my book have exceeded expectations on Amazon, another market, namely that of audible books, won’t hurt.
Besides, recording my own Correctional stories in my own voice should be fun. It’s another learning curve for me but it’s not like it’s a bread and butter issue.
Stay tuned.

Outside Decorations Down

This morning I took down the outside lights in both the front yard and back yard. It looks pretty bare now.

I had shovelled off the back deck for Minnie to get some time outside as it is pretty mild today at +5 C.  She didn’t stay out long, though…maybe about 10 minutes. She prefers the front of the fireplace in the Family Room.

The Mule

Jane and I are just back from watching Clint Eastwood’s movie The Mule in which he plays the starring role.

As usual, with Eastwood movies, it was very well done and very entertaining.

Both Jane and I would recommend it.

Decorations Down

After breakfast, MY Jane and I finished taking down the inside decorations. They are all packed up and stowed away in the garage loft. The two trees are out for pickup.

Jane is now busy working her decorating magic. Here’s a shot of the niche in which we had the Nativity scene displayed over Christmas.

I will also turn off the outside lights and wait for a mild day to take them down and put them away until next Christmas.

Coffee at the Lake

After breakfast this morning, MY Jane and I began taking down inside Christmas decorations. We hadn’t really planned to do it today; it just kinda happened.

Anyway, after a couple of hours, we made a big dent in what had to be done.

I am now down at Minetts Point having a Timmy’s and watching the ducks and geese.

2019 Begins

MY Jane set a beautiful table for NewYear’s Eve dinner.

After a wonderful meal made by Sara and Steve, we moved downstairs to the Family Room. We had great fun watching Minnie watch our Roomba (a Christmas gift from Sara and Steve) manoeuvre around the room. It’s quite mesmerizing looking at this robot doing the vacuuming instead of me.
I managed to stay up past midnight to wish everyone Happy NewYear. We talked with Chris by phone as he was at Brad Dion’s wedding. He sounded like he was having a blast
