Mini Road Trip

This morning, over coffee, MY Jane suggested we get out of the house for a bit and that we grab an Egg McMuffin on the way.

So we jumped in the car and off we went. We first stopped at the waterfront at Minets Point to enjoy the view while having our McMuffins.
Afterward, we took a half hour drive along Ridge Road toward Shanty Bay.
It was good to get out for a bit.

Chaos

I continue to watch, with amazement, the daily chaos that has become the norm at the White House. Nothing is getting done, senior staff are at odds with one another, security clearances are in limbo, policies? change from one Twitter to the next.

In the meantime lobby groups like the NRA use a 200 year old amendment to flout the desire of the vast majority of Americans to institute reasonable gun controls. The dogmatic view that citizens must have access to automatic weapons, especially in the wake of mass murders, defies logic.
It seems that their only hope down there lies with the young students who are mobilizing against the NRA and their ridiculous position.  Hopefully they will have the staying power to sustain the interest and keep the pressure on legislators.
It is encouraging to see corporations distance themselves from the NRA. Banks, airlines and others are severing ties with them.
Looks good!

Good Shopping Day

This morning I had to go to Zehrs to pick up a few things and I was surprised to see so few cars in the parking lot.

It followed, of course, that there would be fewer shoppers inside as well.
I only had a few items to get and I was done in no time. The one downside, though, was the fact that not all products were fully stocked after the weekend.
Still, it was a good time to go shopping.

Surprise Birthday Brunch for Steve

It was a blustery day today as evidenced by the overturned patio chair and the platform feeder all askew.

It was time to drive to Steve’s surprise brunch, minus his mother.  Sadly, she is still not well and is afraid of passing it on to all who will be there, parents, children.  She is driving me down and will wait in the car, in spite of my objections.

It was a sad time for her and when Steve found out she was just in the car, he wanted her to come in and called her.  She felt terrible but could not take the chance of anyone getting sick; there has been way too much of that already.

He enjoyed his time with family, in spite of the circumstances and was greatly pleased at receiving the birthday video!

Boring

It’s plus 5C today and the sun is shining brightly. Most of the snow in the back yard is gone. Unfortunately, both Jane and I continue our battle with these annoying colds.

Both of us just want to sleep all the time.
But you can’t  lay around doing nothing forever. Or watching TV. It gets pretty boring. Hopefully we’ll get over this sooner rather than later.

Colds

Earlier this week I came down with a cold similar to the one I caught last November. This one is not as bad , though, and I think I’m on the mend.

Unfortunately, Jane ended up with the same cold and has been sleeping a lot.
We were supposed to go down to Steven and Sara’s place to help celebrate his birthday which is today, but we had to cancel. It’s disappointing because both Jane and I were looking forward to spending time with them.

A Gun Crisis in the US

I watched CNN today during which time several people, including survivors of the most recent school shooting, attended a listening session at the White House.

The stories that were told by parents of victims and surviving students were full of raw emotion. Although Trump said something would be done very soon, I have my doubts. After all, he himself received millions from the National Rifle Association. They, of course, are a huge lobby group who suggest that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
One of the attendees at the session even went as far as to suggest arming teachers, custodians and other volunteers in all schools. How can anyone have a serious discussion about solving gun violence when silly shortsighted suggestions like this are even considered.
Why they won’t ban or least restrict the purchase of AR 15’s is beyond me. The only people who should have these weapons are law enforcement or military. SMH

Chasing a Raccoon

Last night, just after dark, I spotted the unwanted raccoon beneath the platform feeder eating seeds that had been spilled out onto the ground.

I immediately armed myself with the pepper spray and ran out onto the deck, hoping to give the raccoon a good blast.
But, as soon as it heard me open the door, it waddled off, climbed the back fence and disappeared.

I took the opportunity to lay down a bunch of pepper spray on the tree and all the other areas that looked like a path it might take.

Pondering the Difference

In the last while there has been a lot of sadness on TV and the Internet, mainly in the United States. The recent senseless killing of 17 students in school by a deranged former student with an AR 15 that he legally purchased, is the latest.

I have come to the conclusion that no amount of reason or logic will changed the misguided minds of 2nd Amendment supporters to the South of us.
While the number of gun deaths in Canada is far less than the number in the States, it is not the Canadian way to gloat or celebrate something like that.
But sometimes you spot something Canadian that illustrates the glaring difference between our priorities from one country to the other.
Yesterday, there was a post about a Texaco sign that was stolen near Barrie.
This post was shared by over 7500 Facebook users between Friday and Saturday. There was a lot of outrage over this incident.
Only one person thought it was funny!
Why can’t there be as much outrage for the killing of innocent children by our neighbours to the South?

Not a Murder of Crows

It’s a nice bright, sunny day here in Barrie. The temperature has risen from -1C to +4C this afternoon. The very light snowfall that we had overnight has melted away.

This morning we had a rare visit from a big crow. Just one, though. And it was quiet.
He didn’t stay long – only long enough to pick at birdseed that spilled on the deck last week when I was cleaning out the tube feeder that hangs in the birch tree.

Pepper Spray

Yesterday I wrote about an unwanted raccoon that has apparently taken up winter residence beneath our back deck. It showed up in the window well a couple of nights ago. We do not want this creature to become a permanent resident and, if it’s a female, we don’t want it having babies there.

So I researched the Internet for raccoon repellent methods and spent the afternoon mixing up a spray consisting of cayenne pepper, onion, garlic and scotch bonnet peppers all boiled in a big pot.
I made enough for several applications and, once the weather warms up, I intend to encourage our resident raccoon to find another home before any babies come along (April or May) by liberally spraying this concoction underneath the deck.
Hopefully it will re-locate. If not, I’ll get a live trap, catch it and relocate it to the City of Toronto where it will have lots of company.

Unwanted Raccoon

Last night, while in the Family Room, MY Jane heard some noises at the window well or what we refer to as Minnie’s window. We call it that because, in the summertime, we have left it open allowing Minnie access and egress at her leisure.

When Jane investigated, she found a full grown raccoon peering in through the glass. I was having a shower at the time but later, the raccoon came back and I shooed it away. I then checked for tracks in the snow surrounding the deck but did not observe any signs indicating the animal had just shown up. Clearly it has been wintering under the deck.
So today, I will be undertaking to encourage this creature to re-locate by spraying raccoon repellent underneath the deck.
In the meantime, we will not be opening the window for Minnie.

Milder

It’s a little milder today, going up to about 7C degrees later today. Our little Minnie has been getting a little stir crazy because she doesn’t like going out in the cold snow. I shovelled all the snow off the deck and carried her out there.

As soon as I stepped outside, she gave a little shiver, but when I put her on the patio table with some treats, she was OK. She stayed outside, looking around and sniffing the air from time to time, for about 15 minutes. Then she came back inside.
I think it does her good to get a little fresh air like that and it gets her out of the Family Room where she tends to cloister herself beside the fireplace.
We’re hoping Spring is just around the corner.

Milestone

Six years ago today, MY Jane and I had our first real date when I took her to a jazz night and dinner at the Old Mill in Toronto.

So tonight, another date night to celebrate that milestone. We went to see the Shape of Water and then dinner.

And where did we have dinner? Why, Milestones, of course.

A Proposal to Increase Voter Participation

A Proposal to Provide Eligible Voters an Incentive to Vote

Voter participation in Canada  has been experiencing a downward trend for sometime.

This proposal is simply to provide incentive to eligible voters to cast their ballot.

In a nutshell I am suggesting that every individual taxpayer who is of voting age contribute $0.50* per week to a “Voting Fund” which would be identified as a separate line item in the Federal Budget. Over four years this would amount to $104.00*

In the years that regularly scheduled elections are held, individuals identified by Elections Canada as having cast their ballot, would then be reimbursed that $104.00. This could be done by cheque or Direct Deposit.

Here are some of the benefits to such a proposal:

·         First time voters (18 year olds with minimal income) would begin voting in greater numbers. It also gets them into the good habit of voting.

·         Most Canadians would appreciate getting a $104.00 (tax free) lump sum payment

·         There would be no cost to the Federal Government

·         Any interest earned on the Voting Fund would remain with the Voting Fund

·         This avoids the negative impression fining non-voters would present…instead it will be seen as a positive reinforcement for voting

·         Provinces could be included in this arrangement so they, too, could provide incentive for voters in Provincial Elections

This proposal would involve participation and co-operation of Federal stakeholders such as the Ministry of Finance, the Canada Revenue Agency and Elections Canada.

Cooking up a Surprise

MY Jane and I stayed at Chris’ and Tonya’s last night after he and Jane had their cooking lesson at the Chef Upstairs.

This morning we surprised Steven and Sara with a little engagement celebration at a downtown Toronto restaurant. They thought they were meeting just Chris and Tonya, Sara’s family, along with Jane and I, were there ahead of time and the looks on the faces of both Steven and Sara when they walked in said it all. We had kept the secret well.
Left side of table: Raha, Nico, Sara, Steve, Gary
Head of the table: Jane
Right side of table: Arasteh, Kendrick, Rebecca, Chris
Tonya (absent from the shot) took the picture.

Cooking Lesson

This past Christmas, Chris gave MY Jane a cooking lesson with an Italian Chef as a Christmas gift.

Today is the day that both she and Chris will attend that class in Vaughn.
I will stay at Chris’ while they’re gone.

Necklaces

MY Jane asked me to do something to give her more room for her necklaces. I had already put up some hooks in our closet, but with then additional jewellery that belonged to her Mom, Ted, more space was required.  So, this morning, I added another 9 hooks and Jane immediately re-arranged all her necklaces.

It’s a pretty basic set-up and easy to add to,  but it’s out of sight and yet allows for a quick visual scan.
Jane is happy.

Alexa

Every day, I find out about more features available on Amazon Alexa. Today I learned that any books you have purchased for Kindle on Amazon can be linked to Alexa and she will read the book aloud to you. One such book I have was written by a former Correctional Officer.

You can even order stuff using Amazon Alexa and she will give you notifications as to shipping info and tracking.
I have already linked it to different lights in the house so that verbal instructions can control the lighting throughout.

A Small World

Yesterday, MY Jane and I took a little drive down to Newmarket to exchange an item at the Apple Store in Upper Canada Mall. On the way back, we decided to stop in at the Tanger Outlet at the 400 and Hwy 89. We were looking for new luggage in preparation for our upcoming River Cruise this May.

We had a look in the Samsonite store there and ended up buying a couple of lightweight polycarbonate cases and a matching carry on bag.
Before that, though, as we were walking through the mall, which has very wide walkways by the way, a man headed straight for me blocking my path. I wondered to myself what the heck he was up to.
Turns out it was my former next door neighbour from Temiscaming, Reggie Pressault and his lovely wife Glenda. He recognized me but I didn’t recognize him right away. When I did realize who he was though, I was delighted to see him. I figure it was about 52 years since I last saw him. He was on his way from Sudbury to Newmarket to visit his daughter.
While Reggie and I chatted about old times and different people we grew up with, Jane and Glenda had a great conversation too.
It’s a small world. I always knew that, but running into Reggie Pressault like this made that saying just a little more meaningful.

Not Ambitious

It’s another cold one in Barrie – minus 11C. Fortunately MY Jane and I have no travels planned for today. Jane has one appointment to attend and nothing else.

I have checked our To Do list and there is only one small project for me that I COULD do, but  I’m not feeling very ambitious today, so it can wait.
We do have to go back to the Apple store in Newmarket before the end of the week to return an item and get a couple more light bulbs compatible with Amazon Alexa. But that’s it.

Chris and Tonya go Dogsledding

Chris and Tonya have been celebrating their birthdays with a weekend in Huntsville with the highlight of their trip being dogsledding. Here’s a couple of pics that best illustrate how much they are enjoying themselves.

While  they were doing that, MY Jane and I finished off the kitchen lighting project and Jane decided to do a thorough cleaning of everything. When I say thorough, she even pulled the stove out to clean behind it too.

Needless to say, our kitchen not only looks spotless now, it even smells clean!

More On Kitchen

Well after looking at the new kitchen light, MY Jane and I decided that having the actual fixture visible was not very appealing. So we decided to add a piece – sort of a valance  idea – and move the fixture forward.

This way we still get lots of light but the unappealing fixture is out of sight. I also added a piece of trim to match the other accent pieces to pull everything together.
Looks much better. All that remains to be done is filling the seams and sanding.

Progress on Kitchen

MY Jane and I did more work on the kitchen lighting today. While I worked on boxing in the space above the sink, Jane went out to get paint.

Things progressed well despite the fact that existing cabinets are not quite square. No surprise there. Although I was a bit apprehensive about getting a good fit on the one length of crown moulding, it worked without a hitch.
This one LED fixture makes a big difference, so mission accomplished.
I managed to conceal the in line rocker switch under the cabinet. Out of sight but still handy.
We have a little bit of touch up stuff to do but that’ll be easy.

Clear the Deck

Later today I will resume work on the kitchen lighting project. But first, I have to get a new piece of crown molding (that matches existing) and paint.

It should be a simple job to box in the part over the window and hook up the new LED fluorescent fixture.
Earlier I went outside to shovel off the deck so Minnie could get out for some fresh air. It’s a bit milder today so she’ll enjoy that.
