Balcony Tiles

A few days ago, MY Jane and I picked up some balcony tiles for Steven and Sara at IKEA. They just snap together for a very nice effect.

They come in packages of 9 square feet and there is 64 square feet to cover.
So rather than buy a full package, I replicated one tile using some scrap wood.
Heres what they look like.

The one on the left is the one I made.

I think if its tucked away in a corner, no one will even notice.

Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Band

Yesterday, My Jane and I drove up to Penetanguishene to attend a Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Band at Discovery Harbour on Penetang Bay.

On the way up, we played all Gordon Lightfoot songs just to get into the swing of things.
But before going to the venue, we stopped in to see a friend of ours where I had forgotten my favourite hat, one I had gotten in the Bahamas sometime ago.
When we finally got to Discovery Harbour, we were surprised to find very few in attendance at the show despite the great weather.
Then we realized that there was another competing attraction – The Urban Slide – which is a giant water slide going on in  downtown Penetang.

A great day, nonetheless.

Garden Flowers and Gordon Lightfoot

MY Jane and I sit on the back deck having our morning coffee whenever the weather permits. We are always scanning the garden flowers, looking for new blooms and those that need deadheading. This morning was no exception.

And, after a few moments of scanning, we noticed that a white lily had blossomed overnight as well as one of the three Rose of Sharon bushes.
Once they have fully bloomed, they will make an amazing display.
And, later this morning, we are heading up to Penetang’s Discovery Harbour for a picnic and to listen to a Gordon Lightfoot tribute band.
Gonna be fun.

Puzzling Flowers

I find it fascinating how the garden flowers seem to cycle through growth spurts followed by periods of flowerless displays.

A perfect example is the honeysuckle plant on the arbour which leads into the back yard proper. A week ago there were hardly any blossoms on it, but now it is in full bloom. And it has gotten really thick.

The thing that does puzzle me, though, is that the right side seems to be growing much faster than the plant on the left. They were both planted at exactly the same time last year, so it makes you wonder.

The Pencil

Yesterday I received an interesting e-mail from a longtime friend and former school mate, Mark Beyeler. He included 3 pictures of a pencil he has carried around with him for the last 50 years or more.

The six sided pencil has a name etched on each of the sides including my name. The others are Markus Beyeler, David Hodder, Heather Cowper, Susan Horner and Grant Thompson.

Why are these names on that pencil? Well, let me explain. These six people comprise the 1965 graduating class from Temiscaming Public High School.

I find it somewhat remarkable that my good friend, Mark, would have thought to do this so many years ago and even more remarkable that he has hung onto it for all these years.

Of course, seeing these six names brings back a ton of fond memories of growing up in Temiscaming.

Thanks Mark!

The Theatre in Penetang

Yesterday, MY Jane and I met up with our good friends Annemarie and Jim in Midland where we had lunch at the Boathouse Eatery before going to the Kings Wharf Theatre in Penetanguishene.

It was a beautiful sunny summer day and we enjoyed catching up on things while we sat on the outside patio overlooking Midland Harbour.
The play we saw, Jonas and Barry was very entertaining and, afterward, Annemarie and Jim headed back home while Jane and I dropped in to see our friends Larry and Marge at Bayport. They were out so we missed them.
It was time for us to head home too. When we arrived in Barrie, we decided to have dinner at Donleighs overlooking Kempenfelt Bay.
Another great day!

Cottage Rental Next Year

MY Jane and I have been researching the possibility of renting a Georgian Bay cottage next summer. We want something not too far from Barrie, something that’s close enough for our Toronto people to travel to.

We are thinking about a long term rental- like maybe a month or so sometime in July would be good.
If we do this, we have to be prepared to book something no later than January 2018.

Kings Wharf Theatre

Tomorrow, MY Jane and I are meeting our friends, Annemarie and Jim, at the Kings Wharf Theatre in Penetanguishene  to attend a matinee performance of a play called Jonas and Barry in the home.

Two seniors are searching for friendship, love, and elusive happiness at the Gateway Gardens assisted living home. Barry Butterfield, a newly retired dentist, is unsure of what to do with all his free time. Jonas Ainsworth, a suave stage actor, spends his days wooing the ladies. Proving opposites attract, the men quickly become an inseparable duo and embark on clever ways to spice up their lives – and the lives of those around them.

A mirthful and thoughtful exploration of friendships forged and relationships renewed, Jonas & Barry in the Home is a testament to living each day to the fullest – regardless of your age or stage in life.

We’ll have lunch first, then attend the play.
Looking forward to this.

Picnic at Beausoleil

Yesterday, MY Jane and I took Chris & Tonya, Sara and Maria out to Beausoleil Island for a dinghy ride and a little picnic. Before getting to the island, though, we stopped at the Hive in Honey Harbour for a look around and bit of a snack. Here’s a view from their patio.

On the way there, we ran into a lot of boat traffic coming our way, some of them leaving rather large wakes. It was impossible to avoid getting a bit wet. Fortunately the bilge pump on the dinghy kicked in and the two or three gallons of water that had come in was quickly pumped overboard.

While we were at the island, we met up with Berc and Roza from Roza’s Dream and also Arnold, their youngest son and his wife, Blair. Berc and Roza were kind enough to lend us some mosquito repellent and after bite.
We stayed for awhile at at a picnic table at Cedar Springs and everyone, except Jane and I, went for a walk along one of the hiking trails.
It turned out to be a great day despite the threat of rain on the way and a little bit of rain when we did get there.

Birthday Surprise

Yesterday, before Chris, Tonya and Maria arrived at our place, Steven and Sara spent some time decorating the place to surprise Maria for her birthday.

They blew up balloons and hung banners inside and outside the house.
Maria was surprised when they got here.

Chris and I BBQ’d chicken kebabs, veggie kebabs and shrimp that MY Jane had earlier put together. Sara had put together the rice. Then, after dinner, we sat around a bonfire sharing stories and enjoying a libation or two.

Of course, no birthday would be complete without cake – an ice cream cake at that!

Weekend Activity

This morning, Steven and Sara will be arriving for the weekend. And, later today, Chris and Tonya will also be coming with their friend, Maria.

We had talked sometime ago about taking Maria up to Georgian Bay for a dinghy ride out on the Bay. Tonya thought Maria would like that. It will probably happen tomorrow because good weather is being predicted.
In the meantime, MY Jane has been busy with menu planning, grocery shopping, food prep and just generally getting things in order for their visit.
As always, Jane and I are delighted when they visit. We always have a lot of fun and you never know what’s going to happen.

Mystery Solved

Yesterday, both MY Jane and I were doing some household chores around the place. Once I was done my stuff, I went down to the Family Room to watch a little TV.

I have that television set up to work via Apple TV, a Christmas gift last year. I like it because, with the Apple TV Remote, it takes just one click to turn everything on….the TV, Apple TV and the Bluetooth Home Theatre system.
Everything was working just fine the evening before.
However, yesterday, when I sat down and clicked the Apple TV Remote, nothing happened. Nothing at all! What the heck! So now I have to do some troubleshooting. My first thought was that the battery in the remote died. So I turned to Google to find out out to operate the system with no remote.
It was then that I learned there is an app to put the Apple TV Remote on your I Phone. Aha! That’s the answer. So I downloaded the app. It worked in the TV upstairs but not in the Family Room.
Another suggestion on Google was to disconnect the power source on the Apple TV and then re-connect it. I decided to try that.
When I went to do that, guess what I found. Yup, it was already disconnected, Jane, with her thorough dusting efforts, had inadvertently disconnected it while cleaning. Mystery solved.
And now I have another app to play with on my I Phone.

Continuing Colour in the Garden

When MY Jane and I first talked about what we would like to see in our back yard garden, we thought it would be nice if there were plants that would provide ongoing colour throughout the summer and that most of the fence would be hidden by greenery.

Well, I think we are pretty much there.
This morning I noticed another batch of lillies is ready to flower with one having opened overnight.
And, when I stand back and look at the overall appearance, most of the fence is hidden from view, just as we envisioned.
Other than the annuals such as the dusty Miller, begonias and impatiens as border plants, the rest of the flowers are perennials. Jane has done a great job of selecting them to achieve the look we talked about.
The Rose of Sharon bushes at the rear of the yard and echinacea, when they bloom later, will keep up the “continuing colour” concept. We’re happy!

Hot Day

This afternoon MY Jane and I went shopping for some clothes for me. I got a couple pairs of summer shorts, a short sleeved shirt and some pyjamas.

It’s a hot day so, as soon as we could, we returned home where the Air Conditioning was making the inside of the house nice and comfortable.
Interestingly, Minnie seems to prefer the heat, choosing to stretch out on the deck and endure the heat, fur coat and all.

Crokinole Board

I haven’t done a woodworking project in quite some time so, yesterday, I decided to make a crokinole board. This is something I had in mind for quite awhile. It’s another game we will have available when we’re looking for some fun.

I began by cutting the base out of 1/2 inch plywood 32″ square and then making it into an octagon and gluing on rails from scrap 3/4 x 3/4 pine.
I then fashioned a jig for my plunge router and cut a 26″ circle out of 1/4″ plywood. I draw circles on that with a black sharpie and then added the pegs made out of 3/16″ dowelling cut into 3/4″ lengths and glued in place. I cut the centre hole with a 1 3/8″ Forster bit and then glued the circle onto the base.
Here’s the completed construct waiting for varathane and wax.

Precious Memories

A few days ago MY Jane got an e-mail advising that the cemetery marker for her Mom had been set in place. We wanted to see it, so we arranged to meet up with Steven and Sara there. Chris and Tonya were unable to come.

The inscription says it best:
Each day was an adventure
With your style, wit and love of life
Your family cherishes many precious memories
It was some of those precious memories that we reflected on afterward at a restaurant in Port Credit. The photo in front of Steven, pictured below, is one that was taken 10 years ago at that same restaurant when Ted, Jane and Steven were there for lunch one time.

And, shortly after getting there, just as Steven was saying that he thought he was there before, Jane handed him that very photo. Turns out it’s one of Sara’s favourites too.

Quebec Road Trip

Yesterday, after MY Jane came up with the idea of a road trip, she went to pick up some maps and tour books. She spent some time researching travel locations and then we sat together and came up with a very loose itinerary.

Montebello overnight (largest log cabin in the world)
Trois Rivieres – 2nd oldest French City
Quebec City and Montmerency Falls (30 metres higher than Niagara Falls)
Tadoussac Whale watching
Rivierere du Loup – 8 waterfalls
St. Jean Port Joli – Woodcarving Capital of Quebec
Levis – National Historic Site (Fort)
St. Hyacinthe – Agricultural Fair
We plan on leaving in late August. Gonna be fun.

Fun Things

It was damp and overcast when we left Beausoleil Island yesterday and it’s damp and overcast this morning. So, in hindsight, it was a good call to return home. We like camping, but camping in wet weather is not much fun.

As soon as we arrived home, Minnie greeted us at the top of the stairs and seemed glad to see us. Or was that just my imagination?
We immediately unloaded the car and, while I put the wet tent up inside the garage to dry out, MY Jane unpacked all the bins and put all the dishes, cutlery and cookware in the dishwasher.
We are all set for the next time.
After that, we sat in the sitting room getting caught up on Internet news and CNN and Jane read a piece written by Dan Rather who wrote that he was taking a break from writing to go on a road trip with his grandson. That’s when Jane said to me, “I have an idea. What do you think about us doing a road trip?” I said, “I’m in!”
So, sometime in August, we will be heading down to the Gaspe area for a few days. We have no definite schedule. Just wherever we feel like going. And we’ll take turns driving.
It’s always nice to have fun things to look forward to. Especially with MY Jane.

Foul Weather

With very severe weather predicted for the Picnic Island area and an email from a concerned neighbour, MY Jane and I decided to end our camping 1 day early.

We dismantled our site in just over an hour, packed up
the dinghy and headed home.

Nice N Easy

Yesterday we made a trip over to the General Store in Honey Harbour to get ice and afterward took a trip to Ojibiwa Bay to visit with Berc and Roza who were tied up there on Roza’s Dream.

We had a great visit and got caught up on things.
The rest of the afternoon was spent puttering around at the campsite and enjoying the scenery.

Settled In

We had our tent and the dinghy unloaded in no time yesterday. While MY Jane organized the kitchen stuff in the newly constructed gazebo, I set up the tent on the platform.

We spent the rest of the day just enjoying the scenery and serenity of the Bay.
I attached the Canadian flag to a suitable tree limb just because.

This morning we get to enjoy more scenery and coleman stove perked coffee.

Off We Go

We have car all packed with our camping gear and are heading up to Brandy’s Island Marina, then a short dinghy ride to Tonch North on Beausoleil Island.

Everytime I look at all the stuff we are taking, I wonder if we can get it all in the dinghy so as to only make one trip without losing stuff overboard.
I’ll let you know!

Camping Prep

Today, MY Jane and I will be preparing for our five day camping trip up on Beausoleil Island. Jane has already sorted through the bins we have a made inventory lists of the things we will need.

We will be leaving tomorrow and travelling by dinghy from Brandy’s Bay Marina to Tonch North where we have a site reserved. We stayed there once before, much earlier in the season and, though we had fun, it was a little too windy.
It will be nice to finally stay on the bay for a few days straight even though the weather forecast doesn’t look too promising at the moment.
Our across-the-street neighbour, Jenny, has once again agreed to check in on Minnie from time to time. We know she will be in good hands while we’re away.

BBQ Visit with Geoff Angie Jayme and Ben

This morning, MY Jane and I are heading up to Honey Harbour where we will meet up with our nephew, Geoff, his wife Angie and their two children, Jayme and Ben.

We are planning a little dinghy ride over toward Beausoleil Island where we will have a little picnic after which we will all head back to my place for a BBQ, visit and play some games in the back yard.

Mobile Work Station

I have one more mobile work station to construct. I want one to accommodate the bandsaw and belt/disc sander together. Right now the bandsaw is sitting on a small portable work stand and there isn’t a place for the Ryobi sander.

Once I do that, I will be able to do a thorough re-org out there. And I want to install some wall hooks to hang things like ladders, brooms and snow shovels for easy access when needed. The last thing I need out there is a dust collector vacuum device to maximize dust collection while woodworking.
The idea all along has been to make the space multi functional….i.e. a place to park the car in winter out of the snow and ice and still be able to do my woodworking when the car isn’t in there.

Sleeping Under the Stars

Last night turned out to be a beautiful summer evening. Sitting on the deck, enjoying the fresh air and the summer wind was the moment I decided to sleep outside.

I got one of our camp cots down from the garage loft and a sleeping bag.
MY Jane, despite thinking to herself that I might be a bit crazy, (she didn’t say anything, but the look said it all) helped me get set up. She brought out a couple of pillows and an extra comforter.
Minnie wondered what all the commotion was about.
I enjoyed looking at the stars while the rope lights on the arbour cast a warm glow over the deck and me.
The solar powered garden lights added to the atmosphere.
Before too long, I was sound asleep!
That’s when the attack happened! Several intruders first buzzed me then struck. Yup. Mosquitos – and they were hungry. This was about 2AM. I tried to withstand the onslaught, but they were relentless, so I beat a retreat inside the house.
Next time, I’ll put up the tent.

Floor Painted

This morning, bright and early, I emptied out the garage again so that I could clean and power wash the floor readying it for epoxy paint.

Once it dried, I then began painting and, this afternoon I was done.

I was somewhat disappointed though, because it was only after I had begun the painting that I realized just how badly pockmarked the floor really was.

But I couldn’t stop because the epoxy solution was activated and had to be applied within 3 hours. So I just continued painting.
It does look better though. Next time I will completely re-surface the floor first. For now it will have to do.

Garage Floor Repair

Today I am going to tackle a project that I have been meaning to do for some time. I want to repair the garage floor which has a lot of damage caused by deposits from winter road salt. Over the years it has gotten increasingly bad and sometimes I have difficulty rolling my mobile work stations out for use.

My first step will be to remove everything that’s on the floor and thoroughly power wash the whole surface, after which I will use this repair grout to fill in all the holes and cracks.
Then I will let that cure overnight and, tomorrow, I will roll on this epoxy sealer to finish it off.

Hopefully the weather will co-operate.

Planter Stand

Last week, MY Jane noticed that the exterior front entranceway to our house seemed kind of stark. So, yesterday over breakfast, we brainstormed about ways to enhance the appearance.

We considered installing brackets alongside the garage for hanging flower pots but decided against that idea because there was the danger of someone hitting their head on the way up the sidewalk.
After some discussion we finally decided that some kind of planter would be a good solution. So we drew out a few ideas on a paper napkin. I made a rough calculation on a materials list and, using some leftover lattice, I made this:
Jane had already bought the flowers and pots to go inside it. No pressure to get it done quickly…….
She plans on painting it white and, after the summer season, she will use it as a seasonal accent piece that she will decorate in the Fall and at Christmas.
Heres the painted version:

Two Fine Young Men

The older Steven and Chris get, the more they seem to look alike.

This is a picture of them taken while they were up at Blue Mountain during the Canada Day weekend.
That’s Chris on the left and Steven on the right.
A couple of weeks ago, I took this photo of Steven, Sara and MY Jane.
Later, I showed it to Jane and said, “Look at this, Jane. Here’s Chris sitting beside Sara on our dinghy ride.”
She responded, “Oh, you just photoshopped that in there!” Only when she looked more closely did she realize that it was actually Steven in the picture!
Two fine young men!

Canada Day

Last evening, Chris, Tonya and Maria arrived after an unusually smooth drive up from Toronto. Normally, it’s a traffic nightmare, especially on the eve of a long weekend like this Canada Day.

Shortly after, Steven and Sara pulled in the driveway too.
They stayed overnight at our place so we got to have a really nice visit with all of them. We sat out on the patio enjoying the warm weather and having a libation or two, then went down to the family room to continue our conversations and relax.
Today, they are all headed up to Blue Mountain in Collingwood to do some Treetop Trekking, suspended bridge walking and Ziplining. It sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun for all of them.

Maria brought some temporary Canada 100% tattoos which all of us put on.

MY Jane and I have nothing special planned for this Canada Day other than going down near the lake to watch the fireworks display scheduled for around 10PM.
