I’ve always believed in that axiom, “Actions speak louder than words”. Well, it didn’t take the new Liberal government very long to put into action one of their promises. In fact, they did it within 24 hours of being sworn in.
Yes, they restored the long form census, an extremely valuable planning tool. You may recall the previous Conservative government replaced that form with a voluntary 8 question form called the National Household Survey. Predictably, response was poor and the resultant data incomplete or misleading.
The mandatory long form census, which will be used in 2016, is important because it provides much more accurate data. The last time it was used there was a plus 90% return on it. It’s important because it affects Canadian life in many ways. Here’s a few:
Transportation Planning
Health Services
Community Services
Small Towns
Urban Planning
The nicest thing about this, though, is the fact that it will benefit ALL Canadians, even those of a different political stripe. Nice!
