Steven’s New Car

Yesterday, MY Jane and I travelled to Toronto to meet up with Steven to help him take delivery of his new car. On the way, driving down hwy 427, we were hit by a severe thunderstorm. Visibility was minimal and we had to creep along. The wind was fierce too. We got through that and proceeded to the Toronto Island Airport Ferry to go to Stevens workplace where he is Operations Manager.

Here’s Jane looking up at the new company signage that Steven designed and had made.

We then had a tour of the facility which included a huge hangar where several company owned planes are being refurbished. Steven works for Stolport, a company that does work for the UN and also manages the Airport Ferry and Parking.

Both Jane and I were very impressed at how well organized Steven is. He says, “With so many things going on at once, I have to be organized.” Even his office – a corner one with a great view – was very organized.

After the tour, we went to pick up Steven’s new car, a fully loaded Mercedes! A beautiful car!

We capped off the day by going for dinner at a Beaches restaurant close to Stevens apartment.
All in all – a great day!

What We Retired Folks Do

Yesterday we went to the nearby Rogers store to see about getting a replacement I Phone for MY Jane. It turns out that I was eligible for an upgrade so what we did was get the upgrade for me and Jane took over my old phone. It then took most of the afternoon to organize everything and to get all my pictures off my old phone so Jane could start fresh. But at least it’s done.

Since we have come home, Minnie has returned to her habit of getting me to let her in and out of the back yard a zillion times an hour. But how can you resist doing what she wants?

Later today, Jane and I are taking a drive down to Toronto to help Steven take delivery of a new car. He is going to be keeping his old car at his workplace on Toronto Island Airport where he is Operations Manager, so we volunteered to drive him to pick up the new one.

We get to see the new car, where he works, and take the ferry across from the mainland. Now for those of you who are still working, this sounds like pretty mundane stuff. But for two retired people, this is the kind of stuff we like to do.

Just Puttering

Yesterday, MY Jane and I went to Bay Port to have a look at te damaged prop on Georgian Spirit. In addition to the prop, the shaft and rudder were damaged as well. The company that supplies new shafts, located near Mount Albert, is closed all of this week so the repairs will not be complete until next week.

After our return to Barrie, Jane took her Mom, Ted, shopping them back to our place for a visit. I stayed around the house and watered the garden and just puttered.

Home

It’s raining here in Barrie. The neglected flowers in our front and back yards need it badly. MY Jane has worked so hard at making it look beautiful and it’s a shame that it has gotten to this. Hopefully this rain will rejuvenate the garden somewhat.

Minnie was very happy to be back home. She re-acquainted herself with the back yard as soon as we arrived and soon after, plopped herself down in the middle of our bed.
Today, Bay Port will be lifting Georgian Spirit and hopefully fixing the damaged propeller. I am hoping it is just that and not a bent shaft. That would be very costly. I am also having them replace the faulty gas tank sending unit and depth finder.
We will be spending most of the week here in Barrie catching up on things. Jane will be taking her Mom shopping and doing a few other errands.

Great Dinner

Yesterday, The thought of having to dock Georgian Spirit with one engine disabled was somewhat daunting to me. Fortunately, Mother Nature cooperated by keeping the wind down and, with the help of MY Jane, Klae, Steven, and Bay Port Staff, it went pretty good.

A couple of postings ago i mentioned that we had damaged a prop. Damage such as that can be expensive. Then I hear about someone from Montreal with a beautiful Four Winns boat who missed a marker at Potato Island Channel and tore off a sophisticated Zeus drive and sunk. No one was hurt, but the cost to repair this boat……a whopping $100,000 dollars. Ouch!
After being in Bay Port for awhile, MY Jane and I went shopping and I got a Timmy’s and some Timbits, the first in two weeks. Damn…… That Timmy’s is the best.
Later in the day, we went by dinghy to a restraunt at the Midland Town Dock called the Boatworks and Steven treated us all to a great dinner. Thank you Steve.

Back at Bay Port

Yesterday, Steven decided to fly his quad copter with Go Pro camera attached over Frying Pan Bay.

He got some great aerial shots of the bay and surroundings. From the location depicted above, the landing was somewhat rough and the quad copter crashed almost ending up in the lake.

This morning I decided to take advantage of a window of good weather and head back to Bayport before thunderstorms hit.

McCrae Lake

Shaping up to be a nice day.

Yesterday we went by dinghy to McCrae Lake for a picnic and to look at the shrine there.

We saw several young girls, about 9 or 10 years of age, and a couple of camp counsellors, portage a huge canoe straight up the rocks. An impressive demonstration of leadership and teamwork.
Steven and Klae climbed up to the shrine and placed a cross there while MY Jane and I stayed at the rapids.
We had a nice picnic there under the watchful scrutiny of the gulls who were anxiously awaiting scraps.
In our return, we swung by Bone Island to say hello to our friends Larry and Marge. They weren’t at their boat, but we did meet up with them in Larry’s cousins dinghy as they had gone to Honey Harbour.
A nice day finished off with lasagna dinner later on.

Remain in Frying Pan Bay

We remain anchored in Frying Pan Bay. Yesterday we discovered that the forward head holding tank was full. This, despite the fact that I had stopped at Nautilus Marina for a Pumpout last Friday. I even asked the kid there if he was sure it was empty and he re-assured me that it was.

He was wrong.
Today, we plan on taking a dinghy spin over to McRae Lake to have another look at the shrine placed there many years ago for an answered prayer.

If our friends Larry and Marge are at Bone Island, maybe we’ll swing by to say hello.

Travel on One Engine

Yesterday, I decided to take advantage of a good weather forecast and head towards home port. Having only one engine, would be an interesting operation. MY Jane, Steven, and Klae were in agreement.

Jane did some driving because it took about 5 1/2 hrs

Surprisingly, the boat handled not too badly at about 7mph. I only used the bow thruster to help round one sharp corner at ODonnell Point.

We stayed in Frying Pan Bay overnight and were treated to a fantastic display of lightning and thunder which began at about 9 PM.

Earlier, Steven and Klae did some fishing off the swim platform and caught some small perch.

Prop Damaged

Left McCabe Rock about 1:15. Arrived around Cow Island about 5:00.

1/2 km before our destination we hit something and damaged the starboard prop.
Will have to return on one engine.

A Fun Day For All

Yesterday turned out to be a busy day. Steven and Klae went to Honey Harbour and did a little shopping. That shopping included the purchase of a minnow trap and on their return they set out to catch some.

MY Jane and I spent some time tidying up and sitting on the aft deck watching boats and feeding the geese.

Klae caught a very large pike which we let go because no one likes to eat pike.

In the late evening we all went to shore for a bonfire in the same firepit that Steve and Chris made 2 years ago.

We roasted marshmallows and lit sparklers that Steven had bought.

A fun day for all.

How to Relax on the Bay

This morning Chris and Tonya left for home after a great week even though the weather was not so cooperative.

MY Jane, Steven, Klae and I will head for points north tomorrow-weather permitting.
Yesterday, Steven demonstrated how to relax on Georgian Bay.

Klae continues to fish off the swim platform hoping to catch some big fish. Yesterday she did have a fair sized pickerel but it broke the line.

Minnie, the official ships cat, continues to sleep wherever she pleases.

Summertime Activities

It was a beautiful sunny summer day at McCabe Rock yesterday. There was a lot of summertime activities going on. MY Jane, Chris, Tonya and I went swimming.

The water was nice and we stayed in swimming for quite awhile.

Later in the day, we went shopping for groceries at Honey Harbour to prepare for the arrival of Steven and Klae later.
During the day, we paused for some liquid refreshments.

We had turkey scallopini and salad for dinner and shortly after, Chris left by dinghy to pick up Steven and Klae at Honey Harbour.
Later in the evening, we tried letting a Chinese Lantern go but it was a bust. The thing landed in the lake and went out. Oh Well!

Good Times

Well, yesterday we sailed Georgian Spirit to McCabe Rock, one of our favourite anchorages.

After gassing up at Nautilus Marina, Chris and Tonya took the dinghy via Little Dog Channel while MY Jane and I went around the South end of Roberts Island.
Later tonight, we will pick up Steven and Klae. We’ll stay at McCabe for the weekend and Aquapalooza then Chris and Tonya will depart. Then it’s another full week with Steven and Klae.
Good Times!

Dinner at Henry’s

Yesterday began as another rainy day. Chris tried fishing again, but no luck. He and I then went to shore and I filleted the fish I had caught the day before. It was a rough job, but we got two nice fillets which we decided to pan fry right away for a taste. Everyone liked it.

MY Jane and Chris donned snorkelling fins and swam to a nearby island in the afternoon.
Last night we went to Henry’s on Frying Pan Island where Chris and Tonya treated us to dinner.

Today we plan to meander toward McCabe Rock and stop at Nautilus Marina for gas and a Pumpout.

Morning Pick-me-Up

It’s another rainy day in Port Rawson. Chris is anxious to get fishing again. Last evening, after a delicious dinner prepared by MY Jane, he and I went out to a nearby spot and I caught another – maybe two pounder. I’m going to filet it a little later. Haven’t done that for over thirty years.

I’m hoping that it will clear up later today so we can do some swimming and go on a dinghy ride somewhere.

I’m just waiting for the coffee to perk so I can have my morning pick-me-up.

Rainy Day in Rawson

Yesterday, we moved to Port Rawson Bay. We had to make a trip of about 5 miles to Leblancs Store on Frying Pan Island to get more milk and bread. Tonya bought us all ice cream cones which was a nice treat. Chris filled the dinghy up with gas despite the fact that it was selling for $2.10 a litre.

MY Jane and Tonya prepared a great dinner of vegetable kababs and shrimp which we barbecued.

After dinner, Chris and I went fishing nearby.

I caught a small pickerel about 1 1/2 lbs but that was it. I kept the fish on a chain with the intention of catching more while keeping it fresh. It didn’t last the night, so this morning, I decided to fillet it on the swim platform. Unfortunately, it was very slippery and ended up sliding right back into the lake before I finished.

Right now it’s raining and it looks like it might be one of those all day types, so we’ll hold off on going fishing again until later.

Checking out Port Rawson Bay

This morning has begun as a bright sunny day.

That’s a shot through the Master Stateroom window.
Yesterday, MY Jane and Chris went swimming despite the fact that it was overcast and a bit windy.

And later in the day we took a dinghy ride to Port Rawson to check out how many boats from the Rendezvous were still there. Most had left so we plan to move there today.

Chris and I went fishing just around the bend from here. No luck but we did get a chance to observe a beaver at work in between sounding an alarm that we were close by loudly slapping his tail against the water.
We had a great dinner of eggplant casserole that was prepared by Tonya.
The day was capped off with several games of cards. A fun day!

Official Ships Cat

We left Bay Port aboard Georgian Spirit late morning and travelled about 40 miles to our point of anchorage just West of Port Rawson Bay.

The little red arrowhead is our present location.

On our way, we stopped at Indian Harbour for lunch and a swim. While there, we were approached by two men in a dinghy who said they had something for me. Turns out they really like the name of our boat, Georgian Spirit.
Tom and Gord Smellie make their own beer called Georgian Bay Beer and it’s in sale in LCBO outlets but not the Beer Store. Pretty cool of them to do that.

Chris and I did a little fishing with no luck while MY Jane and Tonya did a lot of talking.
For dinner, we had a sea food lasagna made by Tonya’s sister, Michelin, and it was delicious!
Minnie continues to explore around the boat. Yesterday she ventured out on to the walk around and made her way to the bow and back the other side.

Earlier I had said if she ever did that, she was definitely the Ships Cat.
Meet the Official Ships Cat — Minnie!

Heading to Port Rawson Bay

Chris & Tonya arrived last night ready for the beginning if a week aboard Georgian Spirit sailing to points North. Minnie, the ships cat, will be along for the ride.

We plan on stopping at Indian Harbour for lunch and a swim, then continuing toward Port Rawson Bay.

We won’t go right to Port Rawson because there is a Parkbridge Rendezvous meeting there with about 60 boats involved. We’ll wait until they leave on Sunday, then go.
Chris and I are looking forward to doing some fishing and hopefully have fish for dinner one night.

Propane Connection

Yesterday I went to one of my favourite stores, Canadian Tire, and bought a T fitting for the propane tank. This allows me to have 2 propane devices – the BBQ and Coleman stove/grill – hooked up to the same tank. Stevens idea!

Before this, I was using the little green propane bottles which are expensive and don’t last long. I am happy with this set-up.

Today will be busy. We will be leaving tomorrow for a week to go to points North with Chris and Tonya on board.

We have grocery shopping to do, a Pumpout to be done, and miscellaneous things to do to prepare.

MY Jane and I are very much looking forward to this week with Chris and Tonya and the week right after with Steven and Klae.

Name on Transom

It is shaping up to be one of the best weather days in awhile. The sun is shining brightly and the sky is blue.

Yesterday, MY Jane and I applied the the Georgian Spirit name to the transom and we are quite pleased with the result.

In the afternoon, I took Jane for a dinghy ride down the Wye River almost to the bridge at Hwy 12. She loved it.

Later, Jane washed the galley curtains, something she had been wanting to do for some time.

Weather or Knot to Go

Weather plays such an important part in everyday lives, but even more so in boating.

Yesterday was one day that I was happy to be tied up in Bay Port Yachting Centre in Midland.

A storm passed by us including a lot of thunder and lightning.

I was talking to Bill, one of my marina neighbours and a charter sailboat captain, and he happened to mention a weather forecasting website called Intellicast. You can also download an app on your mobile device. I like it and thought I would share it with you.

Sending Unit Repair

It’s overcast today and I wouldn’t be surprised if it rains. This morning, first thing, a Bay Port mechanic will be installing a new sending unit for the Port side gas tank. As he says, “Its not the actual installation, it’s getting at it that’s hard. He has to move the sofa out of the way then lift up sections of the salon floor. A big job in itself.

It will be good to have this done before we leave for Port Rawson Bay this coming Saturday with Chris and his fiancé, Tonya.

In the meantime, Minnie (the ships cat) continues to make herself comfortable and seems content as long as there are no motors or generators running.

Swans and Dropping Stuff

Because the weather forecast was not looking very promising, I decided to remain in port Saturday night even though our gas gauge issue was solved. Instead, MY Jane, Steven and I had a great steak dinner with mushrooms, potatoes, and veggies. That was followed by an evening of great conversation and company.

Yesterday morning, after breakfast, Steven and I went fishing out in Midland Bay, but it was much too windy so we went exploring with the dinghy.

We went down the Wye River towards Highway 12 and the Martyrs Shrine. In the photo below you can see the twin spires of the Shrine which was erected to commemorate the massacre of 6 Jesuit priests including Fathers Brebeuf and Lalemant. In 1984 the Pope visited and prayed over the grave of Father Brebeuf. You can visit the Martyrs Shrine website here http://martyrs-shrine.com/

Last year Jane and I, along with our friends, Annemarie and Jim, went to Sunday mass there. It’s beautiful inside the church.
It was a great ride down the River. It was quiet and serene. Frogs were croaking in the bulrushes, birds were singing and, unlike the bay, it was very calm.
We very carefully wound our way down the river and came upon an unexpected sight. Swans – a pair of them and they had one little one! They were totally unperturbed by our presence and we even got within 6 feet of them with no problem.

We returned to Bay Port and a little while later, Steve had to leave for home.

Later in the day, I wanted to change one of the safety lines that goes between the stanchions and allows access to the boat. I knew, from past experiences, that working over water is risky…… Dropping stuff in the /:($&$@ lake. Well it happened again. Dropped the darn safety line in the drink! Of course my biggest fan and supporter (Jane) could barely contain herself. In fact, when I taped two boat hooks and a fishing net together to try to retrieve it from 20 feet of water, she couldn’t resist the opportunity to do a video of the event which she promptly posted on Facebook.

Problem Solved

Yesterday morning during breakfast preparation, the generator quit working and would not re-start.

So, given the engine problems of the previous day, I decided to return to the marina to get things checked out. Anyway, we needed the generator working so the fridge would stay cold.
After returning to Bay Port, I had them send a mechanic over and he very quickly determined that the port side gas tank was empty! The sending unit was malfunctioning and was causing the fuel gauge to register an incorrect reading of 3/4 of a tank.
That explained a lot of things …. The boat listing to starboard, the engines quitting when I switched to use the port gas tank, and the generator not working. While it was a pain, I’m glad the faulty gas reading was discovered while we were close to the marina and not out on a big trip. That could have been big trouble.
Steven got the old two rung swim ladder off and installed the new 3 rung ladder installed which was a big help.
MY Jane went for her first swim of the season off the back of the boat in the marina.

Row You Bastards – Row!

Minnie has taken over. After dinner, MY Jane, Steven and I headed for McCabe Rock.

Earlier in the afternoon, I had been down in the engine compartment looking around. I decided I would adjust which gas tanks would be drawn on by the engines. I guess I shouldn’t have done that. Half way to Beausoleil Island, the starboard engine quit. Steven and I fiddled with the gas tank valve setting and got it straightened out. Fortunately it was calm.

Minnie said, Row you bastards, row!

We anchored off Cedar Springs for the night and woke up to beautiful sunshine this morning.
Steven is fishing off the aft deck and has already had several bites.

Minnie Explores the Bridge

After our arrival at McCabe Rock and getting the anchor set, MY Jane continued with the organizing that she had begun on previous trips up. It’s almost there.

The forward stateroom head is working again. A new impeller and housing was needed.
In the afternoon, Jane took her Mom to McCabe Rock to sit at the picnic table and look at the view. I was a bit concerned about Ted going down the ladder to the swim platform to get into the dinghy. It’s about 6 feet down.

I stayed behind her on the way down just in case, but she managed it quite well. Amazing for a 92 year old!

They had a great time and were quite “giggly” on return. It’s those darn insulated glasses. LOL.

I am now sitting on the aft deck making freshly perked coffee on the Coleman stove. Don’t want to wake people with generator. Truth be known…. I like coffee like this better.
Looks like an overcast day but any day out of the City is a good day!
And Minnie has decided to now explore the Bridge.

Today – McCabe Rock

Arrived at Georgian Spirit with MY Jane, her Mom, Ted, and Minnie, the new ships cat. We had a lot of trepidation about Minnie coming in the boat. But she has been pretty good.

When we first brought her on board, she quickly found a spot in the forward stateroom where she hid for a few hours.

But soon she was out exploring every nook and cranny.

I put the name on our dinghy

And also the two sides of the big boat

Still have the large transom name to put on.

I had time to take a dinghy ride over to the Midland Town dock to have a look at a tall ship tied up there.

Today we head to McCabe Rock.

The Ships Cat

Happy Canada Day !
Well, the plan for today is to take MY Jane and her Mom to Bay Port in Midland and to stay aboard Georgian Spirit tonight before heading to our favourite anchorage for a few days. Also, for the first time, we will have Minnie aboard.

Minnie doesn’t know about this yet. She is not a very good traveller because whenever she has been put in a car, it has been to go the Vet – not a favourite thing for her at all. On top of that, she has never been on a boat and, as we all know, most cats are not fond of the water. At least we will have one day at the dock to see how she reacts. The other reason for staying in the marina today is because of the weather forecast. They are calling for thunderstorms today in the area and  radar shows heavy rain approaching.

Tomorrow should be a better day.

So the plan is to leave Bay Port on Wednesday morning and anchor at McCabe Rock until Friday morning. We will then take Ted back home to Barrie, return to the boat, and await the arrival of Steven who will be joining us for the weekend.
