Sew What!

Yesterday we went to Jane’s Mom’s apartment to pick her up and look at her kitchen curtain project. We had given Ted a sewing machine for her birthday last year and this was the first use of it since then.

Jane’s Mom (Ted as she likes to be called) is 93 and still as independent as ever. After getting the thing threaded and bobbin wound, we tried a few practice runs on a Canadian flag that had a seam coming apart. That seemed to work OK.
After a time we decided to return to our place for a BBQ pork roast which I did on the rotisserie and Ted would continue with the curtain project at our house the next day.
I have watched Sewing with Nancy before and was intrigued by the precision cutting and measuring required to have a good product. It reminds me of woodworking which I love to do. Trying to get this new sewing machine going and actually sewing a straight hem on the flag was quite challenging for me. I think I will leave future sewing to the experts like Ted and Jane.

The Bank Corner

Yesterday was a very busy day. Jane had left to meet a friend in Collingwood and I managed to contact the current owner of the boat that we are buying. We had a great conversation about boating in general and the boat in particular. He is agreeable to coming with us to take the boat through the Port Severn lock and over to Bayport Yachting Centre in Midland when we take possession. That makes me feel better because, although I have been boating for 30 years, I have never operated a twin engine inboard or a boat this size. It’s 35 feet long and 13 feet wide, so it’s pretty big.

I also had the opportunity to re-connect with another good friend from my youth, Myles Prince. In one of my previous posts I had included a picture of a log cabin we had built – a picture that had been posted by one of my Facebook friends, Jim Graff. That prompted me to contact Myles and we had a great discussion about the notion of getting together sometime. So now that I have contact information and buy-in from them, all that remains is to pick a date and venue. Sometime this Summer and in Temsicaming would be my choice but we will see what the others think. It’s all very exciting!

The Cabin

Every once and awhile something comes along that you would not, in your wildest imagination, ever think of. Yesterday, one such thing occurred.
Jim Graff, now of North Bay, but formerly of Temiscaming, posted a black and white photo of two guys standing in front of a Log Cabin. Here’s the photo:
The one on the left is Jim Graff and the one on the right is Jim Burd.
As it turns out, this was the very log cabin that my friends and I built near Temsicaming, my home town, over 50 years ago. Those friends included Jim Burd, David Chantler, Myles Prince, and  George Sparling.
I was so excited to see this photo, not only for the memories it evoked, but also because now I could show my wife, Jane, a picture of the cabin that I referred to when telling her stories about the fun I had up there when I was a teenager. Like the time all of us were staying there overnight in the middle of a very cold weekend (-25 below Farenheit) and the snow melted from the roof and froze the door so we couldn’t get out. With no axe inside (we had left it in a stump outside) and no window, we were locked in.
Fortunately Jim Burd’s Mom had sent Jim’s older brother Ken up to check on us and he chopped the ice off the door. What a time.
As soon as I saw the photo, I immediately called Jim Burd (who I have re-connected with last year) to share this great find. After he looked at it, we had another fun time reminiscing about those days of our youth in Temiscaming. We have already agreed that one of these times we are both going back to Temiscaming to try to find that location.
Very cool!

Easter Bunny Visit

Easter isn’t until April 20, but somebody forgot to tell the Easter Bunny. I looked into the back yard this morning and saw a whole bunch of rabbit tracks – even over top of the Quinzee Snow fort.

It make you wonder what the animals are thinking about this long drawn out winter, doesn’t it?
As for me – and everyone I talk to – we’re all saying we’ve had enough. Today the temperature is supposed to go up above freezing so that may help get rid of the snow cover. I’m anxious to see the tulips and crocuses that we planted last Fall.

And, of course, both Jane and I are very anxious to take possession of the boat on which we placed an offer a few weeks ago.

In the Park

Yesterday, just before picking up my cousin George, I went to one of my favourite places in Barrie, the waterfront at Minets Point. I go there pretty well every morning while MY Jane is slaving away at work in her home office, to sip on a coffee and read the daily newspaper. Reading the paper, which these days is more about the trials and tribulations of Mayor Ford, reinforces why I’m so happy in Barrie.
Here are a few pictures I snapped while there:
Contrary to what the sign says, the ice is not thin just yet. In fact, I saw a couple of cross country skiers out there winding their way across the frozen bay.
There is a requirement that ice hut owners get their huts off the ice by a certain date which just passed within the last week or so. So it’s not by ice thickness – it’s by date. The photo on the bottom left is a shot of one such hut on shore near the parking lot. They are built in the manner of a sled so they can be slid/towed on and off the ice. There are some ice huts that are complete with bunk beds, TV’s and many home amenities.
I found it interesting that the City of Barrie has a No Smoking sign posted in the parking lot.

Warming Trend to Begin

Today I am meeting my cousin George for lunch and driving him to a follow up appointment after his recent foot surgery. He is on the verge of finalizing plans for the building of a house here in Barrie and hopes to be moved in by Thanksgiving. I have seen the drawings and it will be quite impressive, I’m sure.

The weatherman is calling for a couple of more days of below freezing temperatures and then we will finally begin an warming trend. About time.
The current owners of the boat we put an offer on are due back from Florida today. I’m thinking that in a couple of days I may call him and try to arrange to meet sometime to ask some detailed questions about operational and maintenance tips for the boat.

Paddy the Snowman

Yesterday we spent the afternoon at Jane’s Moms place helping her with measuring curtains that she is making for her kitchen window. We then had dinner there and a nice visit.

On the way there I couldn’t resist taking a picture of Paddy the Snowman that the neighbours made. Here it is:

Hard to believe this was taken March 23, 2014. This is supposed to be Spring……

Tweaking the Bathroom decor

Yesterday, our plan was to take drive to Collingwood just for something to do. Well, Mother Nature decided to dump a whole bunch of snow on us here in Barrie, so we cancelled that idea. No sense in travelling on snowy highways if you don’t have to.

So, instead, we decided to tweak the bathroom decor a little bit. I bought some crown moulding of a type I had never used before at Lowes. It’s actually made of polystyrene foam instead of wood or MDF board. This stuff is fantastic. It cuts cleanly and is very light. It can be fastened with adhesive instead of nails if you want. And it looks pretty nice. $11 for an 8 foot length.
Jane also wanted to add some depth to the space, so she bought some wall art at Lowes as well ($28) and cut the designs into manageable pieces and strategically placed them on the wall that you see as you first walk in. Notice how the pieces on the medicine cabinet and below flow together. We’re quite pleased. A $75 job.

Enough Already

The weather man was right! We had several inches of snow fall overnight and it continues to fall this morning. All of our little measuring items like the upside down flower pot and the birdhouse in the tree are again covered with snow. Enough already!

Won’t be long

Today there is a light dusting of snow, just enough to make everything look clean again. However yesterday, there was a little greenery showing in our front yard.

It won’t be long!

Quinzee snow fort

Today I have an appointment to see an optometrist for a check up. Other than that I don’t have much else to do. Oh wait! Jane has suggested putting crown moulding in the bathroom, so maybe I will get the material today and work on that.

Yesterday, we had some rain and freezing rain and while BBQing steaks in the back yard, I decided to see how strong the Quinzee snow fort, built by Steven, Chris and Tonya, was. Here’s a video

Things Ahead

Yesterday, Jane received a letter from Canada Pension that her application to begin receiving CPP was approved. So, beginning in June, she will officially begin retirement. It is a big decision for her and not made without some trepidation. Having been retired for the last 12 years, I can say with certainty that there is no life like it.

We will now be able to do the things we have been dreaming of doing together. Like boating on Georgian Bay. It’s so nice to have good things to look forward to and nine better than to be able to spend our summer aboard our newly purchased boat.
Speaking of boat, we have had two names for the boat in mind: Shenanigans or Georgian Spirit. There continues to be some ongoing discussion about which name to use. Right now, the boat is called the Black Pearl.
In the past couple of days I have been busy getting estimates for insurance and quotes on the cost of a marine survey. It’s all very very exciting.

Phones

Yesterday I returned the Rogers Home Phone modem because both Jane and I now have our own cell phones and we were receiving next to no calls on the house phone. In speaking to many of my friends, they are doing the same thing. It seems to be the way to go these days. There does not appear to be any advantage or necessity to have a house phone any longer. Progress.

Hard to believe sometimes. Especially when I think back to my younger days and recall using  two tin cans and length of string as a phone.

Happy St. Patricks Day

Yesterday, we went to Jane’s Moms apartment to have a look at material she bought for new kitchen curtains. My job in the project, of course, is to install the hardware to hang these curtains. We then had Ted over for dinner and a visit. It was also Jane’s last day of vacation and today she has to get back into the work mode.

And I just realized as I am writing this, that it is St. Patricks Day.

Offer Accepted

While visiting good friends, Berc and Roza, in Toronto last night, I received an e-mail from the yacht broker that our offer to purchase the 35 foot President Yacht had been accepted by the owner. Jane and I are very excited and hopeful that the marine survey and sea trial will be satisfactory. Once that happens, the deal will be closed.

C’mon Summer!

Offer has been made

Well, we did it! Yesterday, MY Jane and I went to Midland and met with the sales rep for the 35 foot President Yacht. We put in our offer…..now we have to wait for the marine survey to be done and sea trial…..if the ice ever leaves. In the meantime, here are a few shots of the boat inside and on the bridge.

Exciting

This morning we are heading to  Midland to retrieve personal belongings from the boat which we sold. And, on the same trip, we will be meeting with a sales broker to put a conditional offer in on a 35 foot President Yacht.

The sale will not be final until we have a Marine survey done as well as a mechanical survey. These are the equivalent to having a home inspection if you were buying a house. The boat is a 1987 so it is important to confirm that it is structurally sound and sea worthy.

Very exciting!

Short Lived

Well, as expected, the signs of Spring were very short lived. Today there is a very light dusting of snow in the driveway and it is back to being cold. Weather forecast is calling for 10-15 cm of snow in Toronto, so it looks like our plan to go to see Berc and Roza at Humbertown Framing are going to have to be postponed. It makes no sense to travel to the GTA  in weather like that.

Yesterday, Jane and her Mom, Ted, spent the day together shopping for curtain material for Ted’s kitchen window and for some clothes. They then went to dinner at Ted’s favourite restaurant in Barrie, Shirley’s Bayside Grill.
Sounds like they had a great time together.

Signs of Spring

For the first time in a long while, the sound of a songbird could be heard. This, despite the weather forecast for colder temperatures and a dump of snow for the GTA. I spotted a female cardinal in the top branches of a tree adjacent to our property. Yippee. Signs of Spring begin.

Busy Week Ahead

Jane has week vacation beginning today. Today, we take Miss Minnie to the Vet for her shots. Tomorrow she is having a day with her Mom, Wednesday we are taking her Dad’s war medals to Humbertown Framing then going to dinner with Berc and Roza. On Thursday we are going to take stuff off our boat and Friday, Jane is meeting a very good friend in Collingwood. Sounds busy but it’s all things that Jane wants to do ( except for the Vet trip maybe).

After a lot of discussion this past weekend, we have decided to put a conditional offer in on the 35 President. I will be working on that today. Exciting!

It Doesn’t Get Any Better

-15 C this morning. The clock has sprung ahead by one hour, but not the season. However, the sun is beginning to shine and the thoughts of Spring are foremost in my mind.

Yesterday’s Family celebration of Jane’s Birthday was a resounding success! To see her so happy, in turn, makes me happy as well as everyone else close to her.
Jane has booked a week vacation beginning tomorrow and already, a full schedule has been planned including taking Miss Minnie to the Vet, going out for a day with Ted, having a day with very good friend, Annemarie, and at some point going up to the Marina to retrieve personal belongings from the boat which we recently sold.
So many times Jane and I have remarked that, “it doesn’t get any better than this!” and, to our surprise, it does! So, in closing, let me say once again, it doesn’t’ get any better than this!

Random thoughts

It’s about -18 this morning. I have coffee on the go and I am sitting at my favourite morning spot in the house, at the kitchen window. The quinzee snow fort that Steven, Chris, and Tonya built in February is still standing. From time to time, Minnie will venture in there to explore briefly but she doesn’t like the cold and it’s not for long.

We received some sad news yesterday. The father of one of Stevens very good friends passed away in palliative care. Barry Pearce was a former neighbour of Jane’s in Guildwood. Funeral and visitation details are not known by us right now and depending on those details will determine whether we can have Jane’s birthday celebration tomorrow as planned. Both Steven and Jane want to support the family. Hopefully we will know sometime today. As I have said to Jane many times, we plan the best we can and if circumstances change, we change the plan. Such is life. Eventually we will celebrate a special day for a special lady!
Yesterday I had an appointment with my doctor. I had requested it just to have a review of my blood sugar levels. I was within the normal range i.e. 5.7, my cholesterol is good and so is my blood pressure. So it’s all good.

Cold Day in Barrie

It’s -18 C here this morning! Today I will be taking Jane’s Mom, Ted, to do some shopping and afterwards, I will do a little shopping myself. That’s the extent of my schedule for the day. Ahhhh…..retirement is good.

I anxiously await the day (pretty soon) that Jane will be retired too and both of us can live another part of our dream aboard our boat on Georgian Bay. There is nothing better than to have wonderful things to look forward to and I have more than a fair share, indeed!
Last night I challenged Jane to a game of rummy and she posted that on Facebook. She may not have been expecting the result as depicted below:

Preparations Begin

It’s Jane’s birthday next Monday so I have to start organizing for the upcoming weekend when we will celebrate. Steven and Chris and Jane’s Mom will be joining us here at the house for her special dinner.

Jane has always let the guys choose whatever they want for their birthday dinner and, in keeping with that tradition, I volunteered to do the same for Jane. She has chosen a recipe for beef stew with potatoes and carrots and chocolate meringues and strawberries for dessert. Luckily for me, both Steven and Chris have agreed to help with the cooking.
It’s going to be fun!

The Search has Begun

Yesterday, Jane and I drove to Victoria Harbour to inspect a 37 foot President Yacht which was having extensive work done especially on the deck which was being re-cored. When moisture seeps in between the fibreglass on the decks, it causes the wood to deteriorate. This is found by doing a marine survey. We spent about an hour and a half on the boat checking things out. Lots of room on this boat.

We then went to Port Severn to view a 35 foot President Yacht which was on blocks in an open field. We had to wade through several feet of snow to get to it and the owner had opened up the tarp to allow access. This boat had a similar layout to the first, but had some appealing features the other did not. For example, it had auto pilot and a 2500 watt inverter system. The owner had also added a foredeck wash down hose and installed a water system to allow water to be drawn right from the lake. This would mean not having to worry about replenishing the fresh water tank if out for lengthy periods. There were also newly upholstered cushions for the bridge seating as well as newer upholstery for the dinette area.
The canvas was a bit dated but he had also changed light fixtures inside the cabins.
The price for the 35 footer was significantly less than for the 37.
The owner also said he would replace the aft deck carpet which was a bit worn.
Things to think about.
